VOTE FOR THE STANDARD-TIMES CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK

It’s time to recognize the top cross country runners in West Texas. Take a moment to vote in the Standard-Times Cross Country Runner of the Week poll: • Brighton Adams, San Saba: The junior was third at the San Saba Glory Days meet in a field dominated by 4A and 5A runners. Adams, who is the defending 2A state track champion in the 800 meters, ran a time of 13:47.8 over the two-mile course. She was sixth last year at state cross country in helping the Lady Dillos to the team title. • Claudia Mares, San Angelo Central: The sophomore paced the Central girls team to a first-place finish at the San Antonio Spartan meet, which was a “spartan style” meet with barriers and a fire pit on the course. Mares finished seventh overall in a time of 13:47.0 over the two-mile course. • Lesli Salas, San Angelo Cornerstone: The freshman ran away with the girls individual title at the Toe Nail Trail Classic. She ran a time of 12:40.83 over the two-mile course, winning the race by 45 seconds over Jim Ned’s Mackenzie Bryan, who was 25th at state last year in Class 3A. Cornerstone is a TAPPS Class 1A school. • Manuel Torralba, Ozona: The senior won the boys title at the Toe Nail Trail Classic in Christoval. He led the Lions to the first-place title. Torralba ran a time of 15 minutes, 23.69 seconds over the three-mile course. Manuel and his twin brother Humberto finished 22nd and 21st respectively at last year’s UIL State Cross Country Championships.
