SEVENTH GRADE VICTORIOUS, EIGHTH GRADE FALLS SHORT TO OWLS

The OMS Seventh Grade opened their season with an outstanding 24-12 win over the Reagan County Owls on Sept. 12 at Lion Stadium. The Lions were outnumbered almost 2-1 in this match up, but that was not an issue for these young scrappy men. The Lions fell behind but were able to tie the score at the start of the second period when Ryan Hurst had a successful run around the right end. The point after try was unsuccessful and the score was tied at 6-6. During the ensuing kickoff, the ball was jarred loose by a Lion defender and recovered by Francisco Villapondo. The next Lion score came on a 60-yard run by Michael Daniels. The Lions were tied 12-12 at halftime. The Lions extended their lead in the second half to 24-12 on two short runs by Michael Daniels before the game ended. The defense led by Ryan Hurst, Corey Galindo, Rico and Roger Capetillo kept the Owls from getting to the corner and down the sidelines. The Lion coaching staff was proud of the effort these young men put forth. The Lions on many occasion mentioned how awesome the atmosphere was during the game created by our cheerleaders and supportive fans. The Eighth Grade Lions were not able to find the answer to the ball control offense of the Owls. The Lions kicked off to the Owls and when the dust settled it was 5:30 left before halftime. Yes, the Owls kept the ball the entire first quarter and almost two minutes into the second quarter. The Lion offense only ran seven offensive plays the first half, but missed by inches only being down 12-6. The actual score at half was 12-0 Reagan County. The Lions came out the second half and tried to find some offense, but were unable to sustain drives until the final minutes of the game when the Lions crossed the goal line with seconds left in the game on a Rigo Treto run off tackle. Dusty Smith and Chris Ramirez helped move the sticks during the final scoring drive. The Lions had positive run plays negated by penalties in the second half that will be corrected in future games. The Lions have a lot of season to show improvement. The support of the cheerleaders, fans, and family is always appreciated. The OMS Lions will face Harper at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Harper.
