Eighth Grade Lions roar past Eagles

EIGHTH GRADE LIONS ROAR PAST EAGLES

The Eighth Grade Lions rolled past Junction on 36-0 on Sept. 26 at Lion Stadium. The Lions scored on offensive and defensive plays to roll to a convincing victory. After a fumble recovery by Robert Barrera, the offense scored on 48-yard zone read by Dusty Smith with an outstanding block by Exiyan Mendoza that cleared the way. The two-point conversion run from Smith was good and an 8-0 first quarter Lion lead. After the kickoff, the Eagle offense completed a pass for 35 yards that was fumbled at the Lions’ 35-yard line and was picked up by Smith and returned 65 yards for a touchdown. Smith was escorted by Mathew Daniels and Chris Ramirez on the return. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful and score stood 14-0 favor of the Lions. On the ensuing kickoff, Daniels demonstrated excellent tackling skills for the Lions. The Eagle offense put together a nice drive that was stopped at the Lions’ 24-yard line. The stop was spearheaded by Rigo Treto, Mendoza, and Tad Reynolds. With three minutes left in the first half, the Lion offense was able to score in seven plays with tough runs by Treto, Ramirez, and two pass and catch plays from Smith and Daniels. The scoring play came on a 15-yard pass from Smith to Daniels. Treto added the two-point play with a hard cutting toss which made the half time score 22-0 Lions. The Lions kicked off the second half and the Eagles first possession produced three outstanding defensive plays for the Lions. Mendoza had an open field tackle, Treto had a sack for a loss and Daniels had a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown. The two-point was unsuccessful and the score now stands 28-0. The final Lion score came in the fourth quarter after an eight play drive that began on the Eagle 40-yard line that ended in a 12-yard run by Smith. The two-point conversion was good by Treto, which brought the final score to 36-0 Lions.
