LIONS MAKE STATEMENT COMEBACK IN DISTRICT WIN OVER STAMFORD

STAMFORD – The Ozona Lions were determined to come away with a victory Friday night. Coming behind from a 14-point deficit, the Lions outshined the Bulldogs, 39-28, for their first district win. “Another good win for the team. We believe it puts us in the driver’s seat as far as district play. It’s always good to go on the road against a program like Stamford and come back with a win,” said Athletic Director and Head Coach Kyle Freeman. The Lions struggled in the first half with the Bulldogs taking a 14-0 lead in the second quarter, with the second Stamford touchdown coming off an Ozona fumble. The Lions would get on the board on a five yard touchdown run by Abraham Rodriguez on their next series of plays. Lane Smith’s extra-point kick was good to make it 14-7. Stamford would score again on their next possession making their lead 22-7. The Lions did not back down as quarterback Alec Lara completed a 25-yard pass to Joe Perez for the touchdown inching the Lions closer at 22-13 at halftime. In the second half, the Lions came out roaring and immediately starting scoring with 12-yard and 30-yard touchdown runs by Aiden Fuentes to give the Lions a 27-22 lead at the end of the third quarter. Rodriguez would run the ball in the end zone in the fourth quarter, and Fuentes would seal the win with his third touchdown for the win. Ozona had 322 yards rushing and 88 yards passing for a total of 411 yards. “We stepped it up big time in the second half on both sides of the ball,” Freeman said. Ozona would hold Stamford to only one touchdown in the second half. The Lions’ defense held Stamford to 278 total yards. “The defense stepped it up in the second half and came away with a turnover and a few key stops,” Freeman said. “We simply handled them up front on both sides of the ball.” Rodriguez had 136 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns. Fuentes had 89 yards on eight carries and three touchdowns, plus a reception for 10 yards. Quarterback Alec Lara threw for 88 yards on six attempt with four completions and one touchdown.
