LIONS GET PAST BUFFALOES
The Ozona Lions scrambled and clawed their way to their second district win, 31-24, over Forsan Friday night at Lion Stadium.
The Lions would struggle with turnovers and mistakes throughout the game, but managed to pull out the win.
“It’s always good to get the win. We did not play well though on either side of the ball. Too many mistakes and turnovers. Despite the turnovers we did move the ball well at times and there were some bright spots,” said Athletic Director and Head Coach Kyle Freeman.
The Lions (6-2, 2-0 in district) rushed for 124 yards and passed for 256 yards for 380 yards total on the night with five turnovers.
Quarterback Alec Lara passed for 256 yards and four touchdown passes. He completed 12 passes on 17 attempts with three interceptions.
“We knew if we came out flat they were going to give us game, and that’s exactly what happened when we came out tonight. We were shooting ourselves in the foot the whole first half. Luckily we came back in the second half and did what we had to do to play the ball we know how to play,” Lara said after the game.
Abraham Rodriguez rushed for 53 yards on 13 carries on one touchdown. Joe Perez had four catches for 131 yards and one touchdown. Perez also had 11 yards rushing.
Zachary Talamantez had three catches for 54 yards and one touchdown.
Jacob Childress had two catches for 47 yards and one touchdown.
Lazaro Rodriguez also scored for the Lions.
Jose Dominguez had a punt return for 35 yards and a kickoff return for 32 yards.
The defense held Forsan to 385 yards total and came away with two turnovers.
Carlos Cantu led the team with 16 tackles. Lazaro Rodriguez had 13 tackles, Dominguez had eight tackles, Joe Salas had six and Aiden Fuentes, Childress and Lane Smith each had five.
Emmanuel Venegas had two sacks, and Dominguez had one.
Jesse Vega and Smith each grabbed an interception.
“We are looking forward to having the bye week to have a reset and to work on some fine details of our game. It’s good to move in to the bye week two and zero,” Freeman said.
The Lions will return to district play on Nov. 1 against Winters. The Blizzards (4-4, 0-2) lost to Stamford Friday, 31-28. In their first district game, Winters lost to Hawley 58-14.
Kickoff will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Winters.
