WEEK 1 ROUNDUP: Ozona Lions win Jarryd Taylor's coaching debut HIGH SCHOOL WEEK 1 ROUNDUP: Ozona Lions win Jarryd Taylor's coaching debut Amy McDaniel San Angelo Standard-Times 0:22 2:51 Ozona 15, Sonora 8 In his debut as a head coach, Jarryd Taylor got the win for his alma mater Ozona High School. Taylor, who starred at linebacker while playing for his father Steve Taylor from 2000-2003, led the Lions to a 15-8 win over Sonora at Lion Stadium Friday to open the 2020 season. Class 2A Division I Ozona took the initial lead in the second quarter when Jose Dominguez scored from 4 yards out. Preston Gonzales returned the ensuing kickoff and ran in the two-point conversion to give the 3A DII Broncos an 8-7 lead going into the second half. The Lions took a 15-8 lead with 1:15 to play in the game when Jesse Vega scored from a yard out and passed to Kolton Thompson for the PAT. Sonora had one more possession but came up empty against the Ozona defense. Dominguez led the Lions in rushing with 102 yards on 14 carries. Ozona (1-0) travels to Wink Friday, Sept. 4. Sonora (0-1) hosts Llano.
