Coach of the Week presented by Visit Fort Worth
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football is proud to honor one head football coach in each classification with the Coach of the Week award. Each coach recognized with this special honor typifies the best in Texas high school football.

2020 Coach of the Week Award Winners
WEEK 1
4A: Robert Jones, Bay City
After a winless 2019 season, Bay City brought in one of their own to try and turn things around in Bay City alum Robert Jones. The former Brazosport assistant had a smashing head coaching debut Friday night as Bay City stunned Sweeny 21-15 to earn their first win since Week 11 of the 2018 season.
3A: Gary McElroy, Peaster
The former Burleson head coach led the Greyhounds to their first official win in UIL football competition on Friday night as Peaster knocked off Venus 34-0. Peaster, who had played a sub-varsity slate the past two seasons joined District 4-3A Division I after UIL realignment and will compete for a playoff spot for the first time ever on the gridiron.
2A: Jarryd Taylor, Ozona
Former Midland assistant and Ozona graduate Jarryd Taylor came home this off-season to his alma mater and after one week, things are looking pretty good as the Lions, a 2A-Division I program jumped up and knocked off Class 3A-Division II area power Sonora with a 15-8 win to give Taylor his first win as a head coach.
1A: Homer Matlock, Westbrook
Facing state runner-up and perennial power Motley County, Matlock’s Wildcats refused to be intimidated, putting together a standout defensive effort to pull off one of the state’s biggest shockers in Week 1 with a 58-36 victory.
PVT: Gary Rushing, Azle Christian
After a nip-and-tuck first half, Rushing and his staff made key adjustments at halftime, shutting out Waco Parkview in the second half and scoring the game’s final 30 points to bring home a 66-30 season-opening win.
