SMALLER SAN ANGELO RELAYS A WELCOME SIGHT AFTER LAST YEAR'S EVENT CANCELLED
Everybody in San Angelo Stadium on Thursday agreed: a small San Angelo Relays is better than no San Angelo Relays.
Set to take place the week following the postponement of the boys UIL State Basketball tournament March 11, 2020, due to concerns over COVID-19, last year's San Angelo Relays was cancelled.
While the number of teams was hardly what it has been in year's past and the schedule was greatly reduced -- because of the UIL's COVID-19 restrictions -- there was a track meet and that was cause for celebration for the Classes 4A-1A schools that competed Thursday.
The celebration continues Friday with the Classes 5A-6A division. Field events start at 1 p.m. and running (finals only) begins at 2:30 p.m.
For former San Angelo ISD athletic director Rex Scofield, it was a chance to see two grandsons compete together on a Wall High School relay.
For SAISD officials, it was a chance to remember former race-starter Marvin Boyd, who was a fixture for the Relays but who died Dec. 21, 2020.
And for the Class 2A Ozona girls, it was a big enough meet to make their fourth-place team finish put a smile on their coach's face.
The Lady Lions from Ozona, the smallest school in the field, won two relays and two individual events to come away with 88 3/4 points to finish fourth behind 3A heavyweights Wall and Sonora and 4A Big Spring.
Even though the meet was still in progress, Ozona head coach Eva Myers was already happy with the way her athletes were performing.
"This is awesome," said Myers, who is in her first year guiding the Lady Lions track program. "I am really proud of the girls. This is a bigger division than what we are and they are competing. They were really nervous when they walked in and saw, you know, Wall, Big Spring, Lake View, so that was a little intimidating but they have stepped up. I am so proud of them."
The Lady Lions are young but didn't seem phased by the level of competition, as freshman Faith Quiroz won two gold medals and was third leg on the winning 4x100 meter relay.
Another freshman, Jaylin Tijerina, and sophomore Natalie Rodriguez joined senior Shelbie Galindo on the 4x100 while Tijerina, freshman Mia Davidson, Rodriguez and Galindo claimed gold in the 4x200 relay.
"We have a lot of freshman so this is a learning experience," Myers said. "They didn't have a track season last year."
Quiroz, who has qualified to state in powerlifting for the Lady Lions, got extra learning in the 200 meters after claiming gold in the 100 earlier.
Because the automatic timing system failed to clock Quiroz' flight in the 200, that final flight of the race was run again at the conclusion of the meet.
The results were the same, as Quiroz clocked 27.57 to go with the 13.04 time she recorded in the 100. There were no finals competition on Thursday, as all races were determined by time, which allowed for a shorter meet. Quiroz' time held up and the freshman walked away with three gold medals.
